Gallery
The Gallery
In the gallery, I start from what I like and find interesting when putting together exhibitions. I want
to give Nyköping small doses of engaging culture and fascinating phenomena. Like stepping into a coffee bar for an
espresso – but here, visitors get a shot of culture instead. I hope that Skärmtid will
become a hub for people looking for something beyond mainstream culture.
I've just started sending out invitations to those I want to exhibit. It might be very niche,
it might also be something for everyone – we'll see where it lands.
Exhibitions
ABANDONED JAPAN
For this exhibition, I had the chance to reconnect with an old acquaintance, one of Japan’s
most seasoned Urban Explorers. With almost 20 years and over 1,000 expeditions behind him,
there’s barely a forgotten corner of Japan he hasn’t ventured into.
Urban Exploration in Japan can be a quite unique experience. Here, abandoned places are
often untouched by vandalism, left instead in the quiet care of nature, time, and the
occasional passing animal. Each site tells its own story through rust, silence, and slow
decay. From vast industrial sites and amusement parks to tiny countryside schools and
forgotten facilities. This diversity is at the heart of our "best of" exhibition,
featuring around 20 carefully selected locations that showcase the many faces of urban
ruins.
Nothing can quite match the thrill of stepping into these forgotten spaces, where every
object sparks questions and every shadow holds possibility. But photographs have their own
kind of magic. They capture and preserve moments of stillness, atmosphere, and decay,
allowing you to experience the beauty, eeriness, and quiet emotion of these remote
locations, and explore the many angles of abandoned Japan.
Soft opening of the gallery during Kulturnatt Nyköping
Come by the gallery and play Doom Gallery Experience. We're not ready with our
first exhibition yet, but since we have plenty of screens, why not use them for
something else? So we thought we'd have a soft opening and play some video
games. Among other things, we've dug up Doom Gallery Experience.
For those who are curious, we can also share and show our vision for the gallery
and upcoming exhibitions. Scan a QR code and upload your own art.
It will be what it will be. We don't have a real plan. Around 17:00–21:00.
Gatans galleri (gallery of the streets) – Japanese Manhole Covers
Together with a group of manhole cover experts – Skärmtid offers a colorful journey through
the streets of Japan. The group has tracked down and photographed some of Japan’s more than
6,000 uniquely designed manhole covers.
This exhibition focuses on colored covers. They actually make up only a small portion of all
covers, but they are beautiful to look at. Manhole covers began to be decorated in the 1970s
to spark interest in sewage systems and the environment. Nowadays, the covers are a natural
part of the cityscape, with each municipality creating its own designs related to local areas
and culture.
This exhibition presents a selection of covers from small villages to big city neighborhoods,
decorated with everything from Japanese classics like Mount Fuji and Godzilla to modern anime
and manga favorites.
Sometime in the 1980s, manhole covers gained media attention and various subcultures began to
form. Books were published and people started to take an interest in different aspects of the
covers. There’s more to them than one might think at first glance. As one of our experts put
it: “It’s the whole that makes the covers special – the function: anti-slip, the visual:
brightens up with beautiful designs, and the information: they tell something about the area.
All in the same little circle.”
